ELECTION 'RIGGED' IN EGYPT

On 4 June 2012, we learn of 'vote rigging' in the first round of the presidential election in Egypt.

A key allegation is that the ballots of 1.5 million voters were not counted.

Making the allegations are third-placed Hamdeen Sabahy, a nationalist who wants to help the poor, and fourth-placed Abdel Moneim Abol Fotouh, who says 9 11 may have been an inside job.

Reportedly, ballots cast in favour of Sabahy were found loose outside polling stations in five provinces.

The body overseeing the election has thrown out the complaints.

16 June 2012 is the date of the run-off between Ahmed Shafiq, Hosni Mubarak's last prime minister, and Mohamed Mursi, the Muslim Brotherhood's candidate.

Reportedly, Shafiq's voters included members of the security forces, who are not entitled to vote, and people listed as dead.

International monitors received their accreditation too late to monitor most of the election campaign.
